Description
The African Green Pigeon (Treron calvus) is a small to medium-sized bird widely distributed across sub-Saharan Africa, often seen in woodland, forest edges, and fruiting trees. Its green plumage, which helps it blend seamlessly into the canopy, is accented by a pale yellowish belly and subtle wing markings, while the head and neck may appear slightly greyer in some populations.
Highly arboreal and social, African Green Pigeons are often observed in small groups or pairs, quietly moving through the treetops as they feed on a variety of fruits, particularly figs. Their flight is fast and direct, with characteristic stiff wingbeats that distinguish them from other pigeons. The species is also notable for its soft, high-pitched cooing calls, which can carry through dense foliage.
Relatively common and adaptable, the African Green Pigeon plays an important role in seed dispersal across its range, contributing to the regeneration of native trees and woodland habitats.
