Description
The African Paradise Flycatcher (Terpsiphone viridis) is a captivating and graceful bird found across much of sub-Saharan Africa, often flitting through woodlands, gardens, and forest edges. Males are especially striking, with their chestnut or white plumage, glossy black crests, and remarkably long tail streamers that trail elegantly behind them in flight. Agile and acrobatic, these flycatchers dart through the air to catch insects mid-flight, often accompanied by soft, musical calls.
When walking through shaded forest paths, I often listen out for their distinctive chattering notes among the rustle of leaves. They’re shy yet exquisitely curious creatures — if you stand quietly and wait, there’s every chance one might appear, weaving gracefully through the dappled light to investigate your presence. Encounters like these are brief but unforgettable reminder of the magic that still lingers in our ever diminishing forests.
