Description

The portrait of the Amegilla bee unveils a world of intricate detail, showcasing the mesmerising beauty hidden within this small creature. In our daily lives, we often perceive it as “just” another bee, but upon closer inspection, a stunning array of tiny hairs and intriguing facial features come into focus, revealing its unique personality traits.

Approximately 250 species belong to the genus Amegilla in the tribe Anthophorini. These bees are solitary, meaning they do not live in a communal hive but rather independently in ground soil or mud bricks. While Amegilla bees do not produce honey, they are crucial and efficient pollinators. They possess specialised body hair, often referred to as “sticky hair,” which causes pollen to adhere to them as they forage on flowers. Though non-aggressive, they can sting for defence.
