Description
Angel of the open sky — the Black-winged Kite (Elanus caeruleus) is a familiar sight across open grasslands and farmlands. With pearl-grey plumage, black shoulder patches, and striking crimson eyes, it hovers effortlessly while scanning the ground below.
Their ability to remain suspended in one place, wings flickering rapidly against the wind, is remarkable — a hunting technique few birds master with such precision. I’ve often watched them glide from one vantage point to another, pausing mid-air before drifting silently away. Solitary by nature, they are adaptable birds, equally at home along quiet valleys as they are near human settlements.
