Description
The Bokmakierie (Telophorus zeylonus) is well-known for its striking appearance and melodious calls, and is native to southern Africa. Renowned for its beautiful and intricate songs, the Bokmakierie’s call is a loud, melodious duet often described as a series of whistles, clicks, and chirps. Pairs often sing in unison, creating a harmonious and rhythmic performance. The name “Bokmakierie” derives from the distinctive duetting behaviour of the species, where the male’s call, “bok,” is immediately followed by the female’s response, “makierie.” This unique vocal interaction has been noted in historical records, with the word first appearing in English as “beckbecary” in 1831.
Their presence offers a wonderful opportunity to observe and appreciate these stunning birds. If you’re fortunate enough to have one in your garden, you’ve likely experienced the pleasure of hearing their delightful callouts in the early morning hours.
