Description
Almost every garden in Cape Town has had the immense pleasure of hosting Cape Buntings (Emberiza capensis). These charming birds are often found in rocky mountainous areas, as well as parks and gardens. They are familiar sights in the parks and gardens of villages within their distribution range, becoming quite tame around humans and even venturing into homes in search of food. Cape Buntings forage on the ground, feeding on seeds, insects, berries, and flower buds. They can be seen singly, in pairs, or in small family groups. Monogamous by nature, they build cup-shaped nests close to the ground in thick shrubs or bushes. Similar in size and colouration to the Cape Sparrow, the bunting can be distinguished by its boldly striped head and bright chestnut wings.
