Description
No garden feels complete without a robin, a sentiment I never truly understood until a pair took up residence. The Cape Robin-chat (Cossypha caffra) is known for its intriguing behaviours and endearing characteristics. They are curious, fun to have around, and always closer by than you think. The Cape Robin- chat is renowned for its melodious and varied song, often heard at dawn and dusk. Their repertoire includes a mix of whistles, trills, and mimicked sounds from other birds, creating a beautiful and complex auditory experience.
A Cape Robin-chat has an orange throat and a striking white speculum. Both females and males look the same, but they can be distinguished from other robin-chats by their white speculum (eyebrow), pale orange upper breast, grey sides of the neck, and greyish underparts. In flight, they display orange tail feathers with a faded brown streak. This robin has become one of the most familiar and easily identifiable birds in South Africa due to its successful adaptation to living alongside humans in their gardens.
