Description
Another garden favourite and really fun to observe is the Cape White-eye (Zosterops virens). This charming bird belongs to the extensive Zosteropidae family, which means “girdle-eye,” and is found throughout tropical and subtropical regions in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and Oceania. In Southern Africa, three species of white-eye are present, with the Cape White-eye being the most common and widespread. This vibrant bird is celebrated for its olive-green plumage, bright yellow underparts, and distinctive white eye-ring, making it a captivating sight. Cape White-eyes are highly social and often seen in lively flocks, energetically foraging for insects, fruit, and nectar. Their cheerful, high-pitched calls contribute a melodic charm to their habitat, creating a delightful symphony that enhances the natural beauty of their surroundings.
