Description
When viewed closely, the Common Border butterfly (Mylothris agathina) reveals a wealth of intricate details packed within just a few millimetres of its delicate wings. Each tiny scale adorning its wings contributes to a mosaic of breath-taking beauty. This butterfly is recognised for its gregariousness and slow flight patterns.
Native to sub-Saharan Africa, it is regularly found near coastal areas and occurs in a range of habitats, including grasslands, savanna’s, forests, and fynbos areas. It is often seen flying about on the slopes of Table Mountain. Part of their evolutionary survival defence mechanism includes their pupae that mimic bird droppings.
This butterfly has distinct orange wings with square patches of black, yellow, and white along the front edges, adding to its unique charm and allure.
