Giant Kingfisher

Description

The Giant Kingfisher (Megaceryle maxima) is Africa’s largest kingfisher and a commanding presence along rivers, lakes, and estuaries across sub-Saharan Africa. Measuring up to 45 cm in length, it is instantly recognisable by its bold black-and-white plumage, shaggy crest, and massive dagger-like bill. Males can be identified by their broad chestnut breast band, while females show chestnut only on the belly.

Despite its size, the Giant Kingfisher is often a patient and silent bird, perching motionless above water before plunging headfirst into the depths below. It prefers clear, unpolluted waters bordered by overhanging branches or rocks, which offer perfect vantage points for observing its surroundings.

Breeding pairs excavate deep tunnels into riverbanks, ending in a nesting chamber where the eggs are laid. The call — a loud, ringing “kak-kak-kak” — carries over great distances, often revealing its presence long before it’s seen. Powerful, watchful, and unmistakable, the Giant Kingfisher is a true emblem of Africa’s waterways.
