Description

The Golden-tailed Woodpecker (Campethera abingoni) is a woodland specialist found across much of sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa’s savannas, riverine woodlands, and gardens with mature trees. Its golden-olive back and glittering tail feathers catch the light as it forages methodically along trunks and branches, tapping and probing for ants, termites, and beetle larvae. Unlike most birds, woodpeckers’ skulls are specially cushioned to absorb the shock of drumming, and their long, barbed tongues—able to extend up to 10 cm, nearly the length of their head—can reach deep into crevices to extract prey. Males are marked by a red crown, while females have black-spotted forecrowns. Pairs often stay together year-round, communicating with sharp “wik-wik-wik” calls and soft drumming.
