Description
The Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) is a majestic and highly adaptable wading bird, instantly recognizable by its sleek, grey plumage, long neck, and dagger-like bill. Found across a wide range of habitats, from freshwater lakes and rivers to coastal estuaries and even urban parks, the Grey Heron is a skilled hunter. It typically stands motionless in shallow water, patiently waiting for fish or amphibians to come within striking distance before swiftly spearing its prey with remarkable precision. Despite its large size and impressive wingspan, the Grey Heron is an elegant flyer, often seen gliding effortlessly with slow, deliberate wingbeats. This bird is also known for its distinctive call, a harsh, croaking “fraaank,” which is often heard during flight.
