Description
The Crested Barbet (Trachyphonus vaillantii) is a striking southern African bird with a punk-like crest, vibrant patchwork plumage, and a loud, persistent call, earning it the nickname “bush telegraph” for alerting other birds to nearby dangers. This bold, territorial bird thrives in both urban and woodland areas, feeding on insects, fruits, and even small lizards, helping with pest control and seed dispersal. Interestingly, Crested Barbets are also skilled nest-builders, often carving out tree hollows that they defend fiercely and which later provide shelter for other species once they’re done using them.
