Orange-breasted Sunbird

Description

While The Don, the Orange-breasted Sunbird I’ve grown most fond of over time, dazzles with his radiant plumage and bold presence, it’s his mate who carries the quiet weight of survival. Less flamboyant in her olive-brown tones, she is perfectly attuned to her fynbos surroundings. Her subtle colouring allows her to vanish among the Protea and Erica shrubs where she forages and builds her nest — a vital advantage against ever-watchful predators. During the breeding season, she takes on nearly all the nesting duties, weaving a neat oval nest from fine plant fibres, rootlets, and strands of spider silk, usually suspended low within dense vegetation. She incubates a clutch of one to two eggs — two being typical, though a single egg is sometimes recorded — before both parents share in the demanding task of feeding their young.
