Description
In the book, The Malachite Sunbird fledglings became known as F1 and F2. Each had a distinct approach to discovery and leaving the nest. I feared for them, knowing the butcher bird was always nearby, ready to pounce while their parents were out searching for food. Out of the relative safety of their nest, the fledglings were exposed to various threats eager to exploit their innocence and youth.
F2 was the last to leave the nest, relishing the pampering from its parents, while F1, more adventurous in spirit, was the first to venture out. Once both had exited the nest and were separated from each other, the parents faced the daunting task of feeding and guarding them simultaneously.
They faced numerous threats from predators such as mongooses, snakes, birds of prey, domestic pets, and other larger animals. Fortunately, the camouflage provided by their dull plumage in amongst the foliage helped them somewhat, so long as they remained hidden in the bushes thickets and not exposed out in the open.
