Description
The female Malachite Sunbird feeding her fledgling in the garden nursery. Moments like these happen so quickly that it’s only possible to appreciate them through a photograph capturing that frozen instant in time.
Feeding the fledglings was a full-time job, with both parents working tirelessly to gather enough food to satisfy their insatiable appetites. Adult sunbirds are omnivorous but feed almost exclusively on nectar, playing a crucial role as pollinators of long, tubular flowers. They supplement their diet with small insects, spiders, and other arthropods that they glean from vegetation or catch in flight. Some pollen is also consumed incidentally while feeding on nectar. Among their most favoured plants are various aloes, proteas, strelitzia, Cape honeysuckle, and Wild dagga.
Hatchlings, fledglings, and juvenile sunbirds, however, require a more protein-rich diet, necessitating more insects than nectar in the early stages of life.
