Description
Over the past years, the male Orange-breasted Sunbird, whom I affectionately refer to as “The Don”, and his charming little mate have become familiar fixtures in my garden, raising several broods between the fynbos above and the garden itself. Each season brings a new nest in a new spot — sometimes tucked deep among the Proteas, other times woven discreetly into garden shrubs. Through careful observation and many hours spent documenting their lives, I’ve come to appreciate just how delicate the balance of survival can be. Not all their offspring have made it through, a quiet reminder of the challenges these small birds face daily.
This young one, however, did. Watching the proud parents guide it through its first days of independence in my garden nursery was a moment of pure delight. The image I captured that day summed it all up in a single frame: devotion, perseverance, and the enduring beauty of life continuing right on my doorstep. It remains one of the most meaningful encounters I’ve had with this remarkable pair.
