Description
Observing a Pied Kingfisher (Ceryle rudis) in action is both fascinating and enjoyable. One cannot get tired of watching kingfishers at work and I spent an entire day oberving and documenting this one at Velddrif Berg River estuary. A striking bird, with its dramatic black-and-white plumage, is a visual marvel. Its contrasting colours and bold markings make it stand out along rivers and lakes. Often seen perched on a low branch or hovering above the water, the Pied Kingfisher utilises a remarkable dive-bombing technique to capture fish with precise accuracy. Its distinctive call comprises of a rapid series of high-pitched notes—further enhances its charismatic presence, making each moment extremely captivating and memorable.
