Description
Pied Kingfishers (Ceryle rudis) are remarkably efficient hunters. During my observations of one diving headfirst into the muddy waters of the Berg River, it was rare for him to emerge empty-handed. These skilled predators perch high above the water on branches, rocks, or power lines, allowing them a clear view of the surface. When not perched, they hover over areas of water they deem promising for fish.
With their sharp eyesight, they detect fish and aquatic insects beneath the water. Upon spotting a target, they execute a precise, high-speed dive, folding their wings tightly to streamline their entry and maximise their chances of a successful catch.
