Description
The Purple Roller (Coracias naevius) “gets its name from the dramatic aerial display flights — dives, loops, and wing-rolls — which early European naturalists described as “rolling through the air.” The genus Coracias comes from the Greek korakías (κορακίας), meaning “raven-like bird,” referring to its relatively large size and strong bill, though it’s unrelated to crows. “Roller” = from their aerial displays “Coracias” = Greek for raven-like. The Purple Roller performs these flights less often than its brighter relatives and is a resident across sub-Saharan Africa”.
