Description
The Red-headed Weaver (Anaplectes rubriceps) is a striking and adaptable bird, with males in the south of its range showing a brilliant red head and face contrasting beautifully with yellow wings and white underparts. This combination makes it one of the more distinctive weavers found in southern Africa. Females are paler, with olive-yellow tones and only a hint of red around the face.
Unlike most weavers that breed in large colonies, the Red-headed Weaver is more independent, often nesting alone or in small groups. The male constructs an oval-shaped nest from grass or palm fibres, usually suspended from the tips of thorny branches. They favour dry woodlands, savanna, and bushveld areas, where their bright colours and constant activity make them a lively presence year-round.
