Description
The Saddle-billed Stork (Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis) is one of Africa’s tallest and most striking storks, reaching up to 1.5 metres in height with a wingspan of nearly 2.7 metres. Its name comes from the bright yellow “saddle” that sits atop its vivid red and black bill — a feature found in no other stork species. Males can be distinguished by their dark eyes and small yellow wattles, while females have clear yellow eyes and lack wattles.
These elegant birds are typically seen in pairs, maintaining lifelong bonds and reusing their large stick nests built high in trees near rivers or wetlands. Their slow, steady wingbeats and bold plumage make them unmistakable as they glide effortlessly over open floodplains.
