Description
The Southern Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris chalybeus), is a vibrant jewel of southern Africa. Males are adorned with an iridescent green head, throat, and back, a brilliant red chest band, and a striking metallic blue band, making them a vivid presence in gardens and fynbos habitats. Females are less colourful, featuring brown upper parts and whitish-grey underparts.
This sunbird is known for the striking yellow tufts often visible on its sides, especially during flight. These bright yellow patches, located under the wings, provide a vibrant contrast to the bird’s iridescent green head and throat and play an important role in courtship displays.
