Description
The Southern Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris chalybeus) is a vibrant jewel of southern Africa, a burst of colour that never fails to brighten the fynbos. The male’s iridescent green head, throat, and back shimmer in the light, divided by a bold red chest band and edged with a fine metallic blue line. The female, though far less colourful, carries her own quiet elegance — soft brown above and pale grey below, perfectly suited to the muted tones of her surroundings.
In flight, these sunbirds are swift and purposeful, darting between flowers in short, direct bursts before pausing to feed. Their movements are quick and deliberate, each flight ending in a poised perch from which they feed, preen, or burst into song. There’s a certain precision to their motion — a rhythm that feels both restless and graceful, as if they carry the pulse of the fynbos within them.
