Description
Microscopic imagery reveals the astonishing intricacies of the powerful muscular exoskeleton of a sugar ant, capable of carrying loads 10-50 times their own weight.
Spotted sugar ants (Camponotus maculatus) can reach lengths of up to 18 millimetres, making them among the largest ants in Africa. They are commonly referred to as carpenter ants since they excavate wood to create their nests. Colonies consist of approximately 10,000 workers, with founding queens establishing new colonies claustrally (without feeding). This involves the queen ant sequestering herself in a small chamber and hatching the first generation of workers, nourishing them primarily on stored body fat.
