Description
Derived from the Greek words “lepis,” meaning scale, and “pteron,” meaning wing, the term “Lepidoptera” aptly captures the essence of butterflies and moths, whose characteristic scaled wings define their beauty. These intricate scales imbue their wings with a kaleidoscope of colours and patterns, elevating them as some of the most visually captivating insects in the natural world.
Butterflies, with their approximately 160,000 species, constitute a significant portion of the Lepidoptera order. Evolving from certain groups of moths, both butterflies and moths belong to the same family, showcasing a shared lineage and ancestry.
Within the Lepidoptera order lies a vast diversity, manifesting in an array of shapes, sizes, and ecological roles. This diversity is not confined to their wings’ colours and patterns alone but extends to encompass their behaviours, life cycles, and adaptations to various environments.
