Description
The Village Weaver (Ploceus cucullatus) is a bright flash of yellow and black, its constant movement and chatter bringing life to riverbanks, wetlands, and village edges across sub-Saharan Africa. These highly social birds nest in large colonies, where the males weave intricate, hanging nests from strips of grass and palm leaves — sometimes building several in a single season to attract a mate.
Each nest is a marvel of design, suspended securely from thin branches and shaped with meticulous precision. During the breeding season, trees can be heavy with dozens, sometimes hundreds, of woven nests swaying in the breeze. The air hums with their calls and activity — a lively display of colour, craftsmanship, and community.
