Description
The White-crested Helmetshrike (Prionops plumatus) is a striking and social bird of sub-Saharan Africa’s open woodlands and savannas. Recognized by its white crest, black-and-white plumage, and bright yellow eye wattles, it moves in noisy family flocks that forage cooperatively for insects. These groups also practice communal breeding, sharing nesting and chick-rearing duties—a hallmark of their strong social bonds.
