Description
The White-throated Swallow (Hirundo albigularis) is a graceful, fast-flying bird easily recognised by its glossy blue-black plumage, chestnut crown, and clean white throat and underparts. Common near rivers, dams, and wetlands across southern Africa, it often nests under bridges, culverts, and eaves, shaping neat mud cups lined with grass and feathers.
A true harbinger of summer in South Africa, its arrival from the north around September signals the change of season. Their fluid, acrobatic flight and cheerful calls are a familiar sight over open water, where they skim gracefully in pursuit of insects. As a species sensitive to environmental change, their presence is often a sign of healthy wetland ecosystems.
